Paul Zee Lyons Memorial Scholarships For Chinese Translation Studies, The
LIBERAL & CREATIVE ARTS
The Paul Zee Lyons Memorial Scholarships have been established to assist San Francisco State University undergraduate or graduate students whose accomplishments and career goals include an emphasis on Chinese/English and/or English/Chinese translation.
Priority will be given to students with a proven track record in literary translation, but consideration will also be given to those whose experiences and aspirations are in the area of professional translation and/or oral interpretation between Chinese and English. Scholarship awards from the present competition are to be applied to educational expenses for the Fall 2019 semester, or (in rare cases) for Summer 2019 Chinese language programs approved by the Scholarship Review Committee. The exact number of scholarships and amounts are at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Review Committee.
Funding for these scholarships is from an endowed trust that has been created to honor the life of Paul Zee Lyons, who was born in Shanghai, China and lived in San Francisco, California. Paul Zee Lyons graduated from St. John’s University in Shanghai, and his collections of books and translations are on display at Fudan University in Shanghai. The scholarships are intended to assist talented students to carry on Mr. Lyons’ work in the translation field, in order to promote cross cultural understanding.
