Delmy Rodriguez was born in San Salvador, El Salvador on August 22, 1955. From 1975 to 1979 she studied Psychology at the National University of San Salvador. In search of a better life and to flee her country’s harsh civil war, Ms. Rodriguez and her eldest son immigrated to the United States in 1980 and settled in San Francisco in 1981. Ms Rodriguez started working at SF State’s Cesar Chavez Student Center in 1984. To support herself and her son, she served as a facilities worker during the evening shift. One evening, as she went about her normal work tasks, she collapsed and fell into a coma. Rebuilding her health was difficult and brought many challenges which took her life a few short months later in July 1998. The Cesar Chavez Student Center benefited greatly from Ms. Rodriguez’s numerous contributions as a loyal and dedicated employee. In December 1998, the Cesar Chavez Student Center posthumously recognized Delmy Rodriguez as Employee of the Year. Associated Students is supporting the scholarship award in her memory to honor her legacy, in the hopes of supporting the dreams of immigrant students and families.
