Scholarship Intent: Jason Lloren (BA, Journalism 1992) worked as a journalist for nearly 30 years, with the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner and then the San Francisco Chronicle after
the papers merged. He held a variety of leadership roles, including national/world news editor, business editor and online producer. To honor his life and passions, friends and family dedicate these scholarships in his name to help deserving SF State Journalism students. -
Criteria:
1. Although open to all students in Journalism, preference will be given to students whose work focuses on issues or stories critical to Filipino American or Asian American communities and/or that advances media representation for those communities.
2. Applicants must supply a written statement (not to exceed 250 words) discussing an issue or story critical to Filipino American or Asian American communities, and/or an issue or story which advances media representation for those communities.
3. Students must be currently enrolled in at least three (3) units in Journalism. - Major: Any

- Research suggests Asian Americans tend to receive relatively little media attention compared with white Americans, Black Americans, and Latinos. Are digital platforms and social media changing this landscape? In a minimum 250 word essay, describe how Asian and Filipino Americans have used digital spaces to counter stereotypical narratives or fill gaps in mainstream coverage, and explain what challenges persist in digital environments.
