Deborah Tolman Honorary Scholarship


This scholarship is established in the name of Dr. Deborah Tolman, founding director of the Center for Research on Gender and Sexuality Studies, under the Department of Sexuality Studies, where she was a professor. Dr. Tolman is a feminist developmental psychologist whose research is focused on adolescent sexuality, gender development, and gender equity. She has received wide recognition for her contributions to feminist psychological understandings of female adolescent development. Funding for this scholarship is provided by the Hernreich Foundation.

  • Scholarship Intent: Scholarship will be awarded to the eligible applicant who presents a compelling essay on how feminism has contributed to their sexuality research.
  • Criteria:
    1) Undergraduate seniors any major may apply.
    2) Graduate students must be first year or second year MA Sexuality Studies graduate student.
    3) Must be enrolled at SF State at the time of application and enrolled full-time – 12 units undergrad, 9 units grad – during the semester in which the scholarship is awarded.
    4) Write a compelling essay on what feminist theory, research, and/or practice has contributed to your sexuality related research.
    5) A statement addressing your financial need.
